The following Externally Funded research projects are currently being pusued by Centre of Excellence staff and collaborating partners.

1. Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Systems

The Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Systems is a major project funded by InvestNI, the Integrated Development Fund IDF (via its facilitating body Ilex) and the University of Ulster, with a total project budget of £20.44 million. The project represents an ambitious plan to assist in addressing the technological deficit of the region, by creating a world class research and development unit as a strong driver for economic regeneration.

2. Computational Neuroscience Research Team

This project aims to establish a Computational Neuroscience Research Team (CNRT), whose aim will be to develop accurate computational models of brain regions, which are known to be affected during the course of depression and AD. Such models will be critical in studies of the neurodynamics of aging and neurodegeneration and can be used to support hypotheses that are obtained in experimental paradigms.

3. I'm Clever EU FP7 Integrated Project

The IM-CLeVeR project is conducted by a consortium of 8 partners in Italy, Germany, the UK, Switzerland and the USA. The University of Ulster will contribute to the project in the areas of novelty detection and focussing of attention. IM-CLeVeR aims to develop a new methodology for designing autonomous, self-learning robots controllers .

4. CASCADAS EU FP6 Project

The central objective with CASCADAS is to identify, develop, and evaluate a general-purpose abstraction for autonomic communication services, in which components autonomously achieve self-organisation and self-adaptation towards the provision of adaptive and situated communication-intensive services.

5. Ja.Net UK

The JANET (UK) funded project examines the reliability and accuracy of location data using positioning systems and an investigation of factors that might compromise it with regard to security and privacy.

6. Robot Identification Project

The purpose of the "Robot Identification" project is to automate and formalise the process of generating mobile robot control code, so that "standard" behaviours will no longer have to be programmed, but will be obtained through automatic processes.

7. EPSRC Spiking Neuron Project

The initial aim of this project is to design a compact, low power hardware implementation of a synapse that captures both LTP and STP. Ultimately the project will deliver a standard cell of these synapses, with an associated learning algorithm, which will provide the core building block to significantly advance the plausibility and scale of Neural Networks. Moreover and vitally, the cell can be implemented using standard hardware processing techniques, thus opening the way to low cost implementations.

8. UKIERI Innovations in Intelligent Assistive Robotics

In this project the Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) researchers at the University of Ulster (UU) have teamed up with scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to investigate intelligent systems associated with developing a low-cost assistive robotic system for people with severe movement disabilities.
